Public perception of crime & safety survey results
Introduction
The Wealden Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnership (now known as The Safer Wealden Partnership) commissioned a survey of residents during September 2004 on the subject of crime and disorder. Its aim was to provide a baseline of data to help ensure that the opinions and experiences of local residents are fully taken into account within the Community Safety Strategy for 2005-2008.
Objectives
The main objective was to assess current opinion regarding:
- Perceived problems in people's neighbourhoods
- Actual occurrence of fear of crime
- Experience of crime (including repeat victimisation)
- Precautions taken against crime
- Estate Wardens and Community Policing
The survey was conducted by in home interviews of a quota sample of 545 people across Wealden which was as representative as possible according to the age and gender profile of the district. An example of the questionnaire used can be found in Appendix 4.2 of the Perception of Crime and Safety Report 2004.
Summary of the results
The four most common problems experienced were:
- Young people causing a nuisance
- Having your car broken into or vandalised
- Vandalism or damage to property
- Abandoned vehicles
Priorities for the future
- Greater sentences for individuals convicted
- More diversionary activities for young people to do
- Improve systems to discourage anti-social behaviour
- Better information on enforcement action taken e.g. anti-social behaviour
- Keep the area nice and clean as this makes people feel safer.
