Important Updates to the Issues and Options Consultation Document

Chapter 2 Paragraph 2.3.5 - Relating to Pevensey Bay and the Cuckmere Haven

Paragraph 2.3.5 of the document states:-

2.35 The District’s coast is under continuous pressure from wave action. Shingle beaches at the mouth of the Cuckmere River and at the Pevensey Levels require continuous replenishment. Remaining coastline consisting of natural cliffs is retreating at a mean rate of 0.3 to 0.4m per year, and the coastal management strategy at areas such as Birling Gap is one of managed retreat. The Environment Agency has an aspiration at Cuckmere Haven to allow one of these levels to erode. The Environment Agency will shortly be consulting on whether to continue with defences at Pevensey Bay or to allow erosion ‘back to the railway’ implying some very long term gradual loss of property.

The following statement has been provided to the Council by the Environment Agency:-

"Regarding section 2.35 on page 23 of the Issues and Options Consultation Paper, the text regarding Cuckmere Haven and the aspirations of the Environment Agency is incorrect. The Environment Agency will shortly be consulting on the proposed flood risk management strategy for the lower Cuckmere. Consultation on the management of coastal defences from Beachy Head eastward has already taken place (South Foreland to Beachy Head Shoreline Management Plan First Review, 2005). This Plan covers Pevensey Bay and recommends the continuation of the 'Hold the Line' policy of maintaining or upgrading the level of protection provided by defences along the coast including Pevensey Bay."
